Bicaz Canyon is one of the most breathtaking natural attractions of Romania. It links Transylvania and Moldavia (regions of Romania) and it’s situated near the city of Gheorgheni, in the central part of the Eastern Carpathians.
In this area you can also find the most popular natural dam lake in the country, The Red Lake. It was formed 200 years ago after an earthquake and it got his name from the red sandstone that was transported by the steams.
The Red Lake was also called The Killer Lake because of its legends.
It is said that once upon a time there was a beautiful girl who met a handsome lad at the city market. Once they laid eyes on each other, they felt in love immediately. One day he asked her to be his wife but the wedding never took place because he had to go to serve in the army.
The beautiful girl was really sad and she kept on waited for him. But on a Sunday, while crying, a thief saw her and took her where he used to live, between the mountains. He tried go force her to marry him but didn’t succeed. The young girl was so sad that she crying for help to her only friend, the mountain. It heard the painful cry and answered her by summoning a powerful storm and a huge earthquake which moved the heavy rocks of the cliffs, killing everyone in the way, not only the thief, but also the girl and a shepherd and his flock, who just happened to be there.
